Biography

Brian Hayes, a well-known performer and teacher in Central Florida for more than a decade, is a diverse musician with a fervent love for the classical guitar. Throughout his professional playing career as a classical guitarist, Brian has regularly performed at a variety of special events, including weddings and private dinner parties, and at a variety of venues including Bay Hill Country Club and The Townsend Plantation. Aside from being a classical guitarist, Brian is also a talented vocalist who performs as a guitarist/vocalist as well.

Born in the U.S. into a musical family, Brian took a deep interest in music at a very young age and was exposed to a variety of musical styles. Brian began playing guitar at age 14 with influences such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. At age 17, he started studying classical piano and began vocal training. Brian began his pursuit of the classical guitar in his first year of college in 1992 where he majored in music and chose guitar as his primary instrument and piano as his secondary. He studied classical guitar under Mike Petrovich and as part of the requirements for his degree, studied all aspects of harmony, including four-part writing in the style of J.S. Bach, melodic and harmonic dictation, harmonic analysis, ear training, sight-singing and keyboard harmony.

In 1996, while still in school, Brian began teaching and performing as his livelihood throughout the Orlando area. He taught at various music stores as a guitar/piano/mandolin instructor before moving on to form Hayes Bros. Music Lessons with his brother. Throughout his teaching career, Brian has developed and self-published several of his own teaching methods ranging from beginner to advanced, and over a dozen musical arrangements for solo guitar. He published an article “Avoiding Tendonitis” in the May 2004 edition of the Central Florida Classical Guitar Society Newsletter on the nutritional and dietary factors that can contribute to the condition of tendonitis, a condition that effects classical guitarists and other instrumentalists. A skilled transcriptionist, Brian has accumulated a collection of nearly 1,000 guitar transcriptions that he has transcribed himself and are in the process of being published. Currently studying Flamenco guitar with Flamenco guitarist, Juan Serrano, Brian continues to expand his repertoire and his diversity as a musician.
